Every name has a story, and Studio Nahoa is no exception.

When I started this work, the name wasn't the first thing on my mind. At the time, I was full of ideas and still dreaming bigger than my paycheck. I was focused on the work itself – the kind that keeps you up until 2 am and gets you out of bed in the morning too. When I was younger, building brands, shaping spaces, and creating things were just daydreams I escaped to while making silly blogs, editing my friends' silly little photos we shot on our parents' point-and-shoot cameras. As I've grown older, I realize how much my career has fed on such nourishing roots of curiosity.

While exploring my heritage, I discovered "Nahoa" and dove deep into the history of the people who shaped the land I love. What I discovered was that the O in Nahoa started as a spelling error. Somewhere along the way, the 'u' became an 'o.' That small accident went on to inspire countless hours of design work using those five letters.

From the Nahuatl nāhua-, meaning clear, audible, intelligible speech, to the Nahua, it described their own language spoken well. Popoloca, its opposite, meant speech that landed as noise – of all the words to misspell my way into.

Becoming attached to Nahoa was inevitable, though; I could probably put sentiment into a pebble if I felt moved to. The O – round, unbroken, whole – became its own symbol, something more personal, and a visual representation of the familial moles that imperfectly sprinkle the faces of my maternal bloodline.

For years, Nahoa lived quietly as a passion project my friends and their moms knew about. It became a home to my creative work and pro bono initiatives.

The name kept revealing itself. Years later, the Hawaiian language handed me one more: Nahoa also means rebellious and bold.

Born from imperfection and coincidence, it's become both a brand and personal ethos -a philosophy championing both beauty and unapologetic imperfection. Nahoa wasn’t planned, but neither is the best creative work. But that’s exactly the point.

Today, Studio Nahoa is a creative community for artists, makers – part studio, part collective – for curious minds charting their own course.  That's what our work is built on – not polish, not perfection, but the unglamorous process of figuring it out along the way.

To be human is to be inevitably flawed — but there's a second half to that too: working with the flaws.

When we build ideas with care for ourselves and the world around us, the people walking alongside our curiosity get to learn from it and benefit from it, too.

Born from flaw, built on feeling – find your flow with us.
